Radio silence is over. We just can’t keep these maximum-rotation AM-spectacular acts under wraps.

As you hit play on The Cords self-titled debut album I bet I know just what you’re going to say. I was barely a minute into the record’s opening cut “Fabulist” when it struck me like thunder –  ‘wow, this is like The Primitives reincarnated.’ The reverb-drenched rhythm guitar, the hooky lead guitar lines, the lighter than air melodious vocals, it’s the total package. Follow up track “I Don’t Know (How To Be You)” also locks into a killer rhythm guitar groove that is relentlessly good. “October” then ups the ante adding some speed and a slightly more punky demeanor. “Vera” is something else again, with quirky chord changes and sixties-worthy ‘ba ba ba ba’s. “Bo’s New Haircut” was an early release single and it advertise the goods well with its slightly more slick C-86 style. Not that everything here is Coventry power-pop adjacent. “Weird Feeling” has a very different vibe going on, more poppy, less rocky, despite some strong beat group rhythm guitar work. By contrast “Rather Not Stay” conjures a very 1960s dolly-bird in minor-key style. Album closer “When You Said Goodbye” is a wistful farewell that carries a cinematic punch. You’re definitely going want to grab a copy of The Cords, it’s the guitar pop album we’ve all been waiting for.

Despite coming from Canada’s smallest province Prince Edward Island boys Absolute Losers have got a big big sound on their latest LP In the Crowd, brimming with jangle and Beatlesque melodies. Departing somewhat from the more experimental poprock sound of their 2023 debut album At the Mall, you only have to hear the opening chords of album opener “At the Same Time” to know this record is getting right to the rock and roll point. And it’s pretty much the same attack on “In the Crowd.” “Eagerness” pauses the rock bluster for some very April Wine high-melody moments. But the range of song stylings isn’t limited. There are clear Buddy Holly influences all over “Don’t Go” and some very George Harrison guitar flourishes colouring “For So Long.” “Better Things to Do” rides a pretty fine Beatles/Tom Petty line while “Kiss of Death” gives a punky feel to a solid BTO rhythm guitar groove. Shifting to a more modern mood, “You Never Say You Love Me” has a Sloan-like pop clarity to my ears. Then there’s “Letter,” a song that sounds like a more upbeat Weezer. Personally, I think “Your Colours” is also pretty special, almost folky with great jangly guitar and yearning vocals. Taken all in over one sitting the album is a delightful selection of tunes. Absolute Losers have produced a real winner with In the Crowd.

There’s no ambiguity for me, Maybe is definitely one the albums of the year. This debut release from Memphis outfit The Sonny Wilsons manages to sound comfortably familiar and strikingly different at the same time. It’s partly the tightness of the band’s performance. These guys sound like they’ve been playing together forever. But it’s also how the songs rework timeless rock motifs into something new. Take opening cut and title track “Maybe” as an example. It revs up like a lost new wave era classic but the distinctive vocal work somehow dislodges it from this period in a highly original way. Then “Deserea” gives us a taste of Led Zeppelin-style folkifying before launching a Blue Rodeo-like dark pop ballad. “Miss Kinetic” is more rock and roll hit single material, propelled by a twin blast of exciting electric lead and rhythm guitars. If there’s a divide in the material on this album, the cut lands between rockier and more acoustic guitar numbers. Songs like “Art of Letting Go” and “Who We Are” weave hooky lead guitar lines into rock songs that vibe The Beatles and even Blue Oyster Cult (in their poppier moments), respectively. Sometimes the rock drifts in more dissonant directions too, with both “Summer Rain” and “Ones and Zeros” reminding me of Chris Lund’s recent work. Contrasting this are the lush acoustic guitar tracks like “Favorite Spoon,” “Desert,” “What Happens,” and “Quicksand” where the band’s distinctive vocal work really come to the fore. I’d single out “Wheels” for future single-age. I love how its rocking verses veer a bit country in the chorus. And then there’s the big finish closer “The Way We Dance. ” What embarks as an off-kilter ballad, a slightly askew slow dance for a David Lynch soundtrack, picks up steam in the chorus in wonderfully unpredictable way.

On their debut EP (Four) The Record L.A. fourpiece The What Four offer us a gift from the past, both near and far. From the first bars of “Nowhere Blues” the atmosphere is set, it’s a neo-1950s J.D. McPherson vibe. This is only further reinforced by the languid bluesy groove established on “Long Long Way to Go.” But little will prepare you for the dramatic aural assault that is “Quarter to Midnight.” This track sizzles with a barely constrained rockabilly energy, enhanced by a modern set of pop melodic hooks. The effect is like a rockabilly version of the B52s. The EP’s hit single, definitely. Or is it? “Sunday Morning Ain’t So Easy” wraps up the show with a snappy danceable earworm that says play me over and over. This one would be in maximum radio rotation if I could buy the network. The only really disappointing thing about this release is its brevity, with just 4 songs running a scant 12 minutes. A long-player SOS has gone out for this act over all the usual channels.

K-Tel had some great album covers going in the 1970s, one for every musical fad or fashion. Let’s channel some of that over-the-top energy for a serious slab of summer single-age in not one, but two volumes. That’s 42 summer should be hits for your BBQ-ing playlist. Sizzling!

Kicking things off with something that really vibes a lot old school motifs, Police Touch Museum hit all the marks with “Lover.” The song structure could easily be early 1960s Brill Building or 1970s James Taylor soft rock. Tony Marsico and the Ugly Things also conjure up days gone by with a 1980s heartland rock and roll sound. “Goodbye to Lonely Town” has that Jersey organ and rumbly guitar that recalls everyone from Dion to the Boss. I’ve long been a fan of Tristen’s exquisitely compressed sound, so intimate yet with space for a range of great instrumental tones. “New Punching Bag” sounds a bit country, in a Neko Case outsider vein. It’s one of three killer cuts on a new EP entitled Zenith. I love the ambience of the recent Good Neighbours single “Starry Eyed.” Light and uplifting, it reminds me of the textured pop sound of bands like Foster the People. Toronto’s Pup have a recognizable pop punk sound on “Hallways,” a bit edgy and ragged in the verses but out-of-this-world pop brilliant in the chorus. Hooks for days.

Tomas Nilsson stocks “I Thought It Was Love (But It Was Not)” full of jangle and lighter-than-air background vocals. The song exudes 1960s style but in the 1980s revival sort of way. It’s not hard to hear where The Grip Weeds are coming from with “Gene Clark (Broken Wing).” The songs is a tribute to that member of The Byrds who wrote so many great songs but whose own solo career stalled for reasons that are hard to fathom. A worthy and highly listenable tribute. Hidden Pictures tell a story as old as time with “Wedding Singer (Going Through a Divorce).” The people who surround these life epochal events are expected be exemplars of what the event represents but things don’t always work out that way. This is a smooth bit of 1980s AM radio polished pop. Team power pop veteran Chris Stamey up with The Lemon Twigs and you knew something special would result. And it has. A new album is on the way but for now dig what “Anything is Possible” sonically conjures up. I love the tension, the sense of unease what permeates the tune until the chorus delivers us from evil. Austin Texas band Gentlemen Rogues have a rock solid band vibe going all over their recent LP Surface Noise. This is a band that could keep you dancing all night long. But from this record I’m drawn to the more subtle hooks defining “All Out of Crush.”

Somewhere out in the wilds of Wyoming teen twins Liam and Layne have cooked up a unique blend of ‘grungy mountain folk’ that slides between neat genre divides. “Cheyenne” is their most polished offering to date, IMHO, with killer harmonica and fiddle breaks. The Sonny Wilsons keep teasing us with solid singles. “Miss Kinetic” combines their distinctive guitar and vocal work into another strong effort. Can an album be far behind? The Trews fall into a more Americana zone that I usually get caught up in but their new single “Don’t Get Lost in the Dark” is so guitar-fabulous. The rippling lead lines keep you glued to speaker to see where things are going. A great deal of The Lightheaded album Thinking, Dreaming, Scheming! sounds very 1963 folk fair but “Me and Amelia Fletcher” is a cool departure, very 1980s pop chic. Richard Snow has something to say on his latest stand-alone single “Governments Always Lie” and he’s not being coy about the message. The tune is a very cool, an expertly calibrated slice of poppy indie rock.

With song titles like “Dream Not Found” and “Us Ugly Guys” you quickly get the sense that The King Teen is some serious kind of lovable loser on his EP Us Ugly Guys Got Style. But he sharpens the critique on “Mediocre Man,” a bouncy acoustic guitar-led mediation about over-estimating your competence. Bonus points for including an rousing, updated version of Bertolt Brecht’s “United Front Song” appearing here as “Left Two Three.” Is it just me or does Rhode Island’s Andy Lampert sound particularly English?  There’s a certain kind of sixties poprock from the UK that straddles folk and pop and psychedelia and that’s what hear coming from “The Bottommost of the Poppermost.” Speaking of folk, those folks in The Happy Somethings have resurrected a band member’s old track “A Kind of Loving” and it’s a delight, a gentle paean to unrequited love. Your Academy name the elephant in the political room right now in the US on “National News,” calling out the clown holding the country hostage. Stylistically the vibe is late 1970s Fleetwood Mac in AM radio hit mode. Liquid Mike often leans into a heavier sound somewhere in just about every cut but “Selling Swords” has to be his poppiest offering yet. Very Wavves or SMRS.

The cover and title of the new Fortitude Valley LP says somebody’s is gonna get a serious talking to. Don’t be fooled by the fresh guitar pop vibe guiding early release single “Sunshine State.” Lead singer and songwriter Laura Kovic is only just getting started. Stay tuned for the rest when Part of the Problem, Baby comes out next month.

There is something so distinctive sounding on this debut single from Memphis band The Sonny Wilsons. It’s partially about the vocal attack, particularly the slurred vocal chorus on the ‘maybe’ line. But it’s also about the careful, somewhat spare arrangement of instruments. I mean, it’s not a quiet song but there’s room in this mix to really hear all the bits and adornments. The lead guitar work is also clean and shimmery, adding an element of mystery. The tune and performance really remind me of later period Cowsills or Bill Cowsill’s work with Vancouver-based acts Blue Northern and The Blue Shadows. The overall sound is where poprock landed for me in about 1983. That means riddled with hooks, not afraid of being accused of being commercial, but still holding on to some strong indie cred. Yet it sounds just as in tune with today’s musical multiverse of competing and parallel styles. It’s a Jon Auer of the Posies production and the quality shows. Bottom line – this is one killer single and a strong kick-off for a band whose first long-playing album will be out soon. Can’t wait to hear more.
