Nowhere to go, nothing to do – parking with the radio on was pretty much a regular teenage thing to do back in my day. You might even punch the pre-set radio station buttons and catch the same song playing on different stations! But there are no repeats here. Just 21 singles itching to make your car-time playlist.

We kick things off with David Brookings touching love letter to his wife on “Shelby.” A nice midtempo pop tune giving voice to those age-old sentiments of couple love and companionship. The track is featured on an EP of the same name amidst a few song sketches about cancel culture, football names and a lullaby. Next we crank the pop meter with The Cynz on “Crow Haired Boys.” The song comes on strong with blasting opening chords and drums only to lull us with solid melodic interludes. Erin Din is something else, sounding more like those 1970s English folk rockers Roy Harper or contemporaries like Ed Ryan. “On Top of the World” ambles along with a rhythmic hypnotic quality. From Hanover, Germany comes a stripped down affair under the moniker A Boy Named Song. “You Got the Beat” carefully measures out its sonic interventions – guitar part here, vocal line there – until it all comes together in the chorus. A bit Stonesy, Tom Petty, or even The Replacements. The Midnight Callers are signalling they are coming back power pop strong with their new single “The Eraser.” Fans are comparing it to the Raspberries or The Flashcubes and I’d concur. Worthy b-side award for the band’s energetic cover of The Who’s “Substitute.”

Minneapolis music scene veterans Electric Beauty fill the time between albums with a choice cover of Peter and Gordon’s 1964 hit “I Go To Pieces.” It’s hard to miss the mark with such a great song and the boys do not disappoint. Another band filling time between major releases is Taking Meds. Their new 3-song EP Ext Meds includes an amazing re-interpretation of My Bloody Valentine’s “Drive It All Over Me.” Talk about re-inventing someone else’s tune – TM add more melodic depth to the song while featuring some really special tone on the guitars. You might think that half a band would lose something but The Half Cubes, literally half the membership of power pop stalwarts The Flashcubes, manage to tap into a whole different well of melodic rock goodness. Their new single is a cover of The Rubinoos “The Girls” and features help from original Rubinoos members John Rubin and Tommy Dunbar. The results are dynamically ear-worm good. The Jellybricks are also working on a new album and drip-releasing singles to keep fans on the hook. “All About You” bodes well for what is coming, with a magnetic melodic pull to the tune. Toronto band Mad Ones work a classic descending chord progression with mesmerizing intensity on “Stranger Stranger.” More of the good same can be found on their new album What It Takes.

Electric Beauty – I Go To Pieces

Henry Chadwick works up his most pop psychedelic Beatles vibe on “I Hate the Sound,” a single from his new EP Leaving. It has a spare, spacey other-worldly quality like a kind of melodic meditation. For something a bit more driving and droney Quadruple A offer “Easy Rolling,” though get ready for a melody break-out in the chorus. This is Pennsylvania poppy rock at its finest. Now that southern California quintet The Armoires have finally produced a theme song you can just tuck this in front of the rest of their back catalogue. “We Absolutely Mean It” is a manifesto of musical intent, where making music is about having fun and bringing people together. The sunshine meets psychedelic pop backing is the perfect staging for this sentiment. Steve Conte has got a musical resume that goes on and on, working with artists as disparate as Prince, Peter Wolf and the New York Dolls. On this new LP Concrete Jangle his puts his own unique stamp on things, conjuring 1980s-style popping rock tunes like “Girl With No Name.” By contrast Dave Cope and the Sass reach further back, to a more fertile jangle scene we associate with the mid-1960s. “Precious Heart” lashes out from the start and grips you in its inescapable jangly melodic embrace. And there’s more of the same all through his fabulous new long-player Hidden From the World.

There’s something special about the distinctive sonic atmosphere Sad About Girls manage to create on all their releases. “She’s Not Here” from their new EP of the same name is no exception. Their vibe is slightly dissonant but always with a solid melodic punch in the chorus. And the EP contains a fabulous cover of Split Enz’s “History Never Repeats.” What’s a mere 18 years between records? Glasgow band Martial Arts just pick up where they left off, offering up more of their carefully crafted chamber poprock. New single “No Victory” has the pop drama chops of all those early 1960s and 1970s disaster songs. It’s enjoyable stress free crisis in a 4 minute song. Don’t know much about Brooklyn trio Wifey except that their debut single “Mary Ann Leaves the Band” is an unstoppable hook-filled aural assault, in the very best kind of way. Word is that an EP is coming entitled Just a Tease. Everything about LA band The Reflectors says its 1979 again. It’s the album covers, the outfits, and – of course – the songs themselves. Their new record Going Out of Fashion is one long love letter the late 1970s guitar band revival. But the standout track for me is “Supernova,” with its sly hooky twist in an otherwise understated chorus. Before you know it, it’s got you in its earwormy grip. I’d add “Time Is All I Have” as a worthy b-side. Words like ‘haunting’ accompany the work of Alabama’s Secret Sisters. Riding a fine line between Americana and country, their new release is Mind, Man, Medicine. There’s a lot to like here but right now I’m hooked on “Paperweight” with its Patsy Cline meets Neko Case rockabilly flair.

The work of Michael Goodman as Goodman is an enigma, unclassifiable in terms of genre. But whatever it is, I find myself drawn to whatever he puts out. His new single “Only Testimony” is grand and sweeping, except when its subtle and alluring. The guitars, piano and synth are crisply arranged to overlap and meld while the mix of vocals and harmonies are captivating. From a promised new album in the works.

There’s no danger of being hit with a parking violation for stopping here. You can idle away the time with these radio-friendly songs in park or drive.

The traditional rock and roll album ain’t dead, not by a long shot. Usurped for sure by new commercial formats and changing consumer listening patterns but the album – as a distinct collection of songs (sometimes forming a coherent whole) – remains the default mode of delivery for a wide swathe of guitar-based popular music. Proof? There was simply no shortage of fabulous, super-charged, pop-rocking long-players and extended plays to spend time with throughout 2023. From this embarrassment of musical riches we’ve whittled down a few different lists of LPs and EPs we feel rank as having ‘must have’ status. There’s something for every taste that falls somewhere across the broad, rather idiosyncratic category of ‘poprock’ we employ here. So dive in, see what you think, and do let us know about whatever egregious oversight you think we’ve undoubtedly committed. The hotlinks take you to the original reviews.

This year’s list tipped more toward some classic genre distinctions. The Decibels are beat group heaven for me and When the Red Lights Flash just proves their mastery of this form and seemingly bottomless creativity with it. By contrast, The McCharmlys conjure the ghost of 1950s west Texas rock and roll (even though they’re from California), effectively reinventing it for today. For a different slice, we’ve got the highly sophistico-pop of The Parlophonics. Such great songs, delivered so smoothly. And so on. Our list has got jangle (Buddie, Bory), new wave revival (The Blips, The Blusterfields), country tinges (The Tubs, Rachel Angel), and straight up melodic rock (Richard Turgeon, Dave Kuchler). Long may the LP reign in what’s left of the rock and roll universe.

But there’s more. The ongoing revival of the extended play record format has led to this list, Poprock Record’s must-have EPs from 2023:

The Strange Neighbors EP was hands down my favourite thing about 2023. It brought back a familiar teenage rush of excitement that used to accompany the discovery of something so cool and earworm addictive it just had to be played over and over. Also cool was Joe Dillilo’s oh-so smooth collection of songs, which saw him transitioning from behind the mixing board to the spotlight with ease. And what about Super 8’s alter ego project The Plus 4? An absolute jangle blast. EPs can be such a concentrated blast of melodic goodness, leaving you wanting more.

Before you go there’s one more album we’ve got to highlight. It’s a record so good we had to give it the special award of awesome poprock merit for 2023:

The Flashcubes Pop Masters

As I wrote in the original review, Pop Masters gives you “12 new wave era should-have-been hits, stylishly re-energized” and “celebrates what might-have-been with selections from bands that should have broken big but didn’t.” But the band don’t just celebrate the great songs of bands like The Pezband, The Spongetones, The Paley Brothers and The Shoes, they share the spotlight with them in what amounts to a series of power pop band duets. Let’s face it, this project could have gone very wrong. But again, from the original review, the “results are a pumped up, adrenaline-fueled romp through a host of power pop classics … where every cut is a highlight …” Believe the hype. The Flashcubes are, indeed, pop[rock] masters.

Spend some time with these LPs and EPs and I think you’ll agree, melodic rock and roll is in good health if not wealth. But you can help change that for the price of triple shot latte from your favourite beverage store. Go on, skip the coffee queue and click the links to these artists.

2023 was another banner year for melodic rock and roll. Here at Poprock Record we could spotlight only a small portion of what was go on. Still, we kept busy, writing 58,000 words over 77 posts about literally hundreds of artists. And we liked them all – that’s why we wrote about them. But some tunes had real staying power for our team of singles inspectors. So today we single out 50 should-be hit singles from 2023, songs that deserve another listen and a shot at chart glory. New York’s Strange Neighbors grabbed me early in 2023 with their killer 45 “Hotline Psychic” and never really let go. The lyrics are so spot on, the chorus is mesmerizing, while the instrumental break threatens to break out into Blondie’s “Rapture.” The band is so good they placed another tune in my top 10, the delightful jangler “Whoa! Is Me.” Then Taking Meds and Good Shade seemed like two sides of a very good coin with songs that featured surging insistent hooks that simply demanded replay. The Goa Express tipped toward punk but without sacrificing melodic depth. And The Decibels returned with the modern beat group sound they own. There’s variety in this list, proving genre is no barrier to delivering poprock hooks.

Covers remained fertile ground for music veterans and indie new-comers alike this past year. Juliana Hatfield delivered a whole album of ELO songs, mixing things up with a nicely curated collection of chart hits and deep cuts. Mo Troper introduced a new generation to the genius of Jon Brion with his album tribute, Troper sings Brion. Arthur Alexander covers himself, sort of, with his ace reinvention of the Sorrows’ “It’s Not Love Anymore #2.” And both The Jangles and The Flashcubes covers really revive some great songs for the here and now.

Thrilling wonders: Taking Meds, Gizmo, Good Shade, and The Dumbanimals

Let’s face it, we tune-blogging types got into this writing racket because, on occasion, there’s something we find thrilling about the music. It may be different for every listener but we know when we’ve heard it – something clicks. And, for some reason, we just have to tell somebody about it. So brace yourself for thrills dead ahead.

One listen to Taking Meds pre-release single for Dial M for Meds had me hooked – that’s all it took. “Memory Lane” is a serious endorphin releaser, full of relentless groovy guitar work with just a bit of edge and an oh-so-smooth vocal melody. So what can you expect from a full album Taking Meds experience? In some ways the record has a 1990s guitars-to-the-front, college-indie vibe. Songs like “Outside” and “Aftertaste” are noisy fun, casting straightforward lead guitar hooks against a wall of discordant rhythm guitars with vocals that play touch and go with punk pop. “Life Support” weaves smart lead guitar hooks throughout a song with a Sam Roberts tunefulness while “Long Tooth” works a more discordant seam. Then there are songs that go in a different direction, like “Wading Out” with its Beck-in-hit-mode style or “The Other End” which sounds like it combines a very poppy grunge sound with a bit of the Front Bottoms. For something really different album closer “See the Clowns” launches a great barrage of guitars, only to let things drop down into whisper cool vocals when the vocals start. This album sees Taking Meds fine-tuning their previous pop-punk bluster into a lean melodic rocking outfit worthy of repeated prescription renewals. Warning: repeated listening of Dial M for Meds may bring on feelings of irrepressible joy.

Sleepy Prince Edward Island has cranked the amps for homegrown poppy noise band Gizmo. Their debut EP Buddy System is a giddy rush of loud guitars and droney hypnotic vocals. The kick-off opening track “Producer and Virtual” vibes Weezer with its surging rhythm guitars and slightly discordant melodic turns. There’s something satisfyingly sad and ominous going on here. “Luanne” lightens the mood, sort of, in a Fountains of Wayne unreliable narrator manner. Tune-wise the song also sounds like FOW lost kin, with a touch of 1973 McCartney in there somewhere. “Deepest Skin” is a more brashly poppy moment, approaching a cleaner power pop sound that reminds of a few choice deep cuts from the likes of Odds, Sugar Ray, and Fastball. Then “Prisoner Functionary” launches directly into Weezer territory but quickly breaks out a slightly broader poppy palette, an almost adrenaline-fueled Beach Boys romp. If you like noisy hook-laden guitar records, you’re gonna love Buddy System. My only beef is that its four songs are over in just eight minutes. An album’s worth of Gizmo really needs to be PEI’s next priority export.

On Think Spring Columbus Ohio’s Good Shade are a melody juggernaut, offering a seemingly unstoppable assault of guitars and shouty pop punk vocals so infectiously earwormy it’ll leave you panting. Things start at maximum speed with “I Can’t Imagine,” a riotous party tune with just a hint of darkness. There’s a spy motif lurking in the instrumental break that is just so alluring. Then should-be hit single “When Will You See” rolls over your melodic consciousness and, frankly, nothing much matters for the remaining 3 and half minutes. This is glow basking stuff guaranteed. Yet, barely pausing, the band launches another marquis-worthy number with “Hovel.” The melodic tension here is taut between the dire-sounding verses and the grin-inducing ‘I’m not hurting anyone’ choruses. A number of songs like “Rinse Repeat,” “Too Little, Too Late,” and “That’s a Shame” tease a slower tempo beginning, only to launch cyclonically somewhere in the song. “Mountain” switches things up, going slow, going fast, with a particularly punchy chorus. Generally Good Shade are hard to box in as they’ve got a sound all their own, though “Take Another Day” has a certain Weezer-ish demeanor. The departure moment on the LP can be found with the title track “Think Spring,” a lovely slower-tempo poprock tune. My gut says Good Shade would be an amazing live act, given the excitement overload they deliver on this long-player. Definitely ‘record of the year’ contender.

There’s something refreshingly old school lurking in The Dumbanimals songcraft. Tracks like “Lollygagger” have a timeless song structure (could be sixties, could be eighties) overlaid with a very now indie bash-and-groove performance. The band’s debut LP Thrift Pop is stocked full of similar song workouts. “Hook In Our Jaw” comes on guitar strong with some very tasty nice lead lines but softens things up for the vocals. By contrast, “Doorknob” sounds new wave with grungy guitars. The 1990s get a strong look in on this album with “Futz” offering a rollicking Britpop party vibe while “1995” (not surprisingly) mines that decade’s more discordant poppy rock vein. Then there’s something different again with “In My Car,” an anytime rock ballad that could deep cut an album from any of the last six decades. My personal fave is the loud, mesmerizing “Lullaby for Jack” that manages to combine grinding guitar with heavenly harmony vocals (stay tuned for the fun hidden add-on to this track). The album cover’s baby model may not be digging all this but fans of timeless melodies will.

Heatseeker single: Taking Meds “Memory Lane”

I distinctly remember when Billboard magazine introduced the ‘heatseeker’ designation on their Hot 100 singles chart in the 1980s. Initially it just indicated a song that was moving quickly up the chart but later it would be used to single out new artists or those that hadn’t charted before. Well today’s debut heatseeker single on Poprock Record is new to me and this blog. New York’s Taking Meds have come a long way from their screamcore roots with their new power pop single “Memory Lane.” As frontperson Skylar Sarkis remarked in a recent interview, “We wanted to write big choruses and big leads because that’s what we want to hear right now.” Well they don’t get much bigger than this. The song practically launches into the hook stratosphere right out of the gate. It’s like equal parts Swervedriver, Weezer and Matthew Sweet all battling it out to define what’s going on. But, ultimately, the chorus provides the heat here: it’s relentless, driving, and oh-so hooky. As I return to start with this group album-wise you can really see how they got to where they are now. An unerring knack for melody was always present but often more than a bit buried in the mix. It was certainly coming to the fore on their recent long-player, 2021’s Terrible News from Wonderful Men. But that album had nothing quite like this single. A full album of “Memory Lane” rocking pop goodness? Really. Can’t. Wait.
